Father’s Day is a time to honor and celebrate the incredible dads who have shaped our lives. In the land surveying community, there are countless stories of fathers passing down their passion for precision and adventure to their children. Today, we share a heartwarming and humorous tale of a father and his journey raising the next generation of surveyors.
It all started in the backyard sandbox. John, a dedicated land surveyor, couldn't resist teaching his kids, Sam and Jamie, about the basics of land surveying. While other kids were building castles, Sam and Jamie were learning about property boundaries and the importance of accurate measurements.
"That sandbox was our first project," John recalls with a laugh. "We had more surveying flags and markers than toys!"
John’s passion for surveying was contagious. When Sam and Jamie were old enough, he took them on their first field trip. Equipped with mini-sized hard hats and an abundance of curiosity, the kids were eager to explore the great outdoors with their dad.
"We looked like the smallest survey crew you’ve ever seen," John chuckles. "But they took it seriously. Sam even brought a notebook to jot down 'important measurements'—which turned out to be doodles of trees and birds."
As the kids grew older, John’s lessons became more advanced. He taught them about the latest surveying technology, the importance of accurate data, and even how to handle unexpected challenges in the field.
One particularly memorable day involved a run-in with a very territorial goose. "We learned two things that day," says Jamie. "One, always double-check your coordinates, and two, geese do not appreciate being part of a survey."
Today, both Sam and Jamie are successful surveyors, following in their father’s footsteps. John beams with pride when he talks about their achievements.
"Seeing them take on projects and excel in their careers is the best Father’s Day gift I could ever ask for," he says. "Sam recently led a team on a major urban development project, and Jamie has become an expert in drone surveying. They're making their mark on the industry, and it’s incredibly rewarding to watch."
Of course, the family’s surveying adventures have always been filled with humor. From getting the family dog involved in "survey missions" to using surveying jargon at the dinner table, there’s never a dull moment.
"Jamie once tried to convince her teacher that her homework was late because of a 'calibration error,'" John laughs. "It didn’t work, but I gave her points for creativity!"
This Father’s Day, we celebrate all the surveyor dads who inspire, teach, and share their passion with their children. Your dedication and love for the craft not only shape the industry but also create lasting memories and legacies.
To all the fathers out there, Happy Father’s Day! May your lines be straight, your measurements precise, and your family adventures filled with joy and laughter.
